WINERY

wines since
1928
Our winery is geolocated in the same latitude as some of the most recognized wine regions in the world, such as Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
Nestled between the vast expanses of Brazil and Argentina, our coasts are framed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Rio de la Plata. Located in the department of Canelones, where the country's largest concentration of wineries and vineyards is found, we are just 20 minutes from the center and the seaport of Montevideo.
Antigua Bodega was built in 1928, as a purely family-owned business with 100% Uruguayan capital.

We have a capacity of 2,200,000 liters, with significant underground capacity and various materials for the vinification and conservation of our wines—such as concrete, stainless steel, and barrels of French and American oak. This variety allows us to offer a wide range of styles in the wines that make up our portfolio. We have a strong imprint of domestic consumption and a presence in the markets of Brazil, Mexico, Germany, Panama, the United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden, the United States, China, and New Zealand.

Our vineyards are located in the southern part of the country, in Santos Lugares (La Paz, Canelones), and along the banks of the Santa Lucía River (Melilla, Montevideo), covering a total of 30 hectares. In Santos Lugares, we have plantations of Merlot and Sangiovese, while in Melilla, we cultivate white varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Albariño, and red varieties like Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marselan, Merlot, Syrah, and Tannat.
TERRIOR
We have a privileged terroir with rustic and rocky soils that allow for excellent drainage, enabling plants to absorb only what they need. In Santos Lugares, the subsoil is composed of decomposing pink granite known as "Granito de La Paz''.

Our vines are imported from France and Italy, depending on the variety, and all our fine wines are made with our own grapes.
Harvest typically begins in late February with the harvesting of white grapes and continues into March with the reds. All our grapes are hand-harvested in 20 kg crates, contributing to the proper treatment of the fruit. We vinify by plot, and aging can range from 6 to 36 months, depending on the desired profile for each label.

History

Our Garibaldian ancestor, Vicente Stagnari, began his journey into viticulture in the province of Ancona Comune di Loreto (Italy) in the year 1880. On his estate, he cultivated vegetables, grains, and grapes, producing wine for both consumption and sale. In 1898, his son, Pablo Stagnari Casali, emigrated to Uruguay from the port of Genoa. As a teenager, he worked in the Aicardi quarry, where he met Adela, the owner's daughter, and they married. They settled in La Paz, dedicating themselves to the business of blacksmithing and tinsmithing.
Generations
Without abandoning his trade, they moved to Melilla, in the southern part of Uruguay, where they planted vines. Of the seven children they had, five were boys.

One of them, Héctor Stagnari Aicardi (1908-1955), felt the call of enology. Unfortunately, he died young, at the age of 47. It was his son, Héctor Nelson Stagnari, already involved in the world of winemaking, who continued his father's legacy.
On the other side of the family, Carlo Moise, a farmer and winemaker from Turin, married Mariana Delpero, with whom he had three children. Carlo died young, and Mariana had to raise their children. Twelve years later, in 1897, one of them, Pablo Moise Delpero, traveled to America fleeing from the war.

In the settlements that sprang up along the tracks, he met Ecilda Romero, with whom he had two daughters: Carmelina and Carolina. On October 12, 1929, the couple and their daughters emigrated to Uruguay.
With their savings, they bought three hectares of land in Santos Lugares, in the department of Canelones. With sacrifice and patience, they gradually built their house. They had neither electricity nor water. They dug a well and built a windmill—still present at the entrance of the winery—to extract water. In Canelones, their two youngest daughters were born: Enriqueta and Mariana.

The marriage between Mariana Moise and Héctor Nelson Stagnari in 1955 intertwines the history of both families. Together, they settled in Santos Lugares (La Paz) at the winery owned by the Moise family (now Antigua Bodega).
The legacy
With the knowledge gained from his father and the instructions of his father-in-law, a very young Héctor Nelson Stagnari began crafting his first wines. The absence of his father-in-law due to travel forced him to learn, with much effort and a few setbacks, the complex task of being a winemaker.

Years later, it would be his daughter, Virginia Stagnari (fifth generation), who would leave medicine to take charge of the family business alongside her children Mariana and Carlo (sixth generation).

The trio took on the noble task of preserving the family legacy with passion, dedication, and soul. That small winery that produced 110,000 liters of wine now produces 2 million liters, a remarkable growth thanks to the work of Héctor Nelson Stagnari.
The extensive history of the winery, the vision and leadership of Virginia, along with the tenacity, energy, and talent of Mariana and Carlo, and the invaluable contribution of Laura Casella—a recognized professional with an outstanding career in the world of wine—make Antigua Bodega a place of consolidated trajectory in the world of Uruguayan wine.

Uruguay
Land of
tannat
Uruguayan winemaking is predominantly characterized by small family-owned wineries. Migration movements throughout our history brought European winemaking families who, with their knowledge, founded wineries in our country. Many of these founding wineries today maintain their legacy thanks to the commitment of third, fourth, fifth, and even sixth-generation heirs.
Positioning
Uruguay is located—like Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand—between parallels 30 and 35 of the southern latitude. The generous influence of the Atlantic Ocean and rainfall in the warmer months give our wines a unique freshness.

Tannat is undoubtedly the grape variety that has put Uruguay on the world map of viticulture. Pascual Harriague introduced it to our country in 1870 from Madiran, its place of origin in southwestern France. Today, the production of Tannat-based wines in Uruguay surpasses that of France in volume.
